Approval
This project was completed on the 8th of January, 2021.
Project scope
This project will develop a skill set in BIM awareness for the Construction, Plumbing and Services (CPC) Training Package. BIM is an emerging technology with the construction industry and will be a requirement across many occupations, making a micro-credential in BIM awareness an essential component of the CPC training package. Other training packages that cover occupations across the built environment will also be able to import this skill set to use as upskilling or continuous professional development.
One new skill set will be developed:
- Introduction to Building Information Modelling
- up to 3 new units will be developed.
Project timelines
The Case for Endorsement is due for submission in August 2020.
Please note, the Property IRC is exploring a somewhat similar—but separate—project on integrated digital delivery. Although these projects are being developed separately, both IRCs are keen to ensure that units and skill sets from each training package complement (rather than duplicate) each other.

Summary of development
This project is developing a skill set in BIM awareness for the CPC Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. Other training packages that cover occupations across the built environment will also be able to import this skill set as a means of upskilling or continuous professional development.
A Technical Advisory Group has been formed to guide the development of this skill set. Representatives of the construction industry are encouraged to participate further to ensure that the industry’s objectives for workers undertaking this skill set are met.
Once endorsed, the units of competency will be made available to industry as elective units within the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction qualification.
The Case for Endorsement will be submitted for the AISC meeting in August 2020.
Key outcomes
One new skill set has been developed including three new units of competency that provide an introduction to BIM:
CPCBIM4001 Plan building or construction work to comply with BIM project requirements | Skills and knowledge required to plan building or construction work activities to comply with BIM project requirements. It includes determining BIM requirements for building or construction activities, preparing the tools and technologies required to use BIM processes, and accessing and comparing 2D drawings and 3D models and related data. |
CPCBIM4002 Use BIM processes to carry out building or construction work | Skills and knowledge required to use BIM processes to carry out building or construction work. It includes using 2D drawings and 3D models and related data to clarify work requirements, manage interferences and risks associated with planned work, and schedule and sequence work activities and resources. |
CPCBIM4003 Finalise building or construction work to comply with BIM project requirements | Skills and knowledge required to finalise building or construction work to comply with BIM project requirements. It includes confirming handover requirements and deliverables, validating data for completed work, and completing handover in compliance with the BIM execution plan for the project. |
Consultation strategy
Draft one of the proposed units are now available for feedback until Tuesday 16th June 2020. The current unit drafts and feedback link can be found below.

Project status
The validation draft of BIM training products for the construction industry is now available for final stakeholder consideration. We are seeking feedback to confirm that the content of the proposed units of competency meets industry needs. The project is being guided by a Technical Advisory Group which has considered the stakeholder feedback received to date and has incorporated that feedback, where appropriate, into the draft units of competency.
There are three units of competency which will be presented as a BIM awareness skill set.
- CPCBIM4001 Plan building or construction work to comply with BIM project requirements
- CPCBIM4002 Use BIM processes to carry out building or construction work
- CPCBIM4003 Finalise building or construction work to comply with BIM project requirements
The units can be downloaded below.
